Explore Orkney without rush or compromise.

High depth private tours through the Orkney UNESCO heartland and the elemental North Isles. We move beyond the standard sightseeing loop to decode the archipelago through a lens of archaeological precision and lived heritage. From the Neolithic engineering of Skara Brae to the ritual silence of the Ring of Brodgar, these journeys unearth a perspective shaped by deep time. This is Orkney handled with the grit, clarity, and professional integrity it deserves.

The Historic Orkney Experience

Orkney tour guide: Uncompromised. Technical. Native heart.

Strictly private tours

Maximum of four people. No rubbing shoulders with strangers. A day shaped to your pace because every one is different.

Synchronized Logistics

We remove the operational friction. All UNESCO World Heritage permits and site admissions from Skara Brae to Maeshowe are secured in advance with no hidden fees.

An Intelligently Paced Narrative

Insights often occur in the stillness between the sites. We move at an unhurried pace, pivoting for the North Sea light, or staying longer if a site resonates or even if the kids just want to skim stones.

The Authority of Heritage

Explore with a local island expert who has a lived discipline of ongoing study. He knows where the stories are buried and sometimes, who buried them.

Private Orkney Tours: A story-driven experience

Historic Orkney is a specialist tour and expedition service led by a local Orcadian who has spent a lifetime studying these islands: first as a curious islander, then as a professional guide and researcher with a unique perspective shaped by deep time.

From the Neolithic engineering of Skara Brae to the wonder of the Ring of Brodgar, we don't just "visit" sites. We figure out why they’re there. I am here to gently correct the myths and promote understanding of landscape as it actually is and why it mattered both then and now. handled with the grit, clarity, and professional integrity the landscape deserves. These are the moments that tend to stay with you, often in ways you may not expect.

A day built around You (and the weather)

Every journey is private, entirely flexible, and shaped around your interests. I don't do rigid schedules or generic itineraries. The day flows naturally to the Atlantic light, your curiosity, and whatever the North Sea throws at us.

As visitor numbers increase, buses and scripts tend to flatten a place. I do the opposite. We leave room for the "side mission" and the unexpected discovery, delivered with unhurried pacing and a splash of northern humour. It is history experienced with the stillness and depth it demands.

The Historic Orkney pillars

  • Painting the history: There are no lectures with dates "I would fall asleep." Instead, the history of the islands is mapped through the landscape to see how people lived, what they built, and why these places still matter in a larger story.

  • The secret handshake: Access to the layers of Orkney invisible to most. Having visited Maeshowe before it was a UNESCO monument, I treat these sites as more than just tourist stops. I value the curious question and the technical deep-dive over a one-way broadcast.

  • The unshared experience: Unlike volume-driven group tours, this is an agile, private expedition. Fixed loops are bypassed so the day belongs to you, allowing for the stillness and depth these ancient monuments demand. Your time is an unshared resource.

Connect with the source

Utilize the free call: Schedule a ten-minute informal talk at a time that suits you to align your interests with the island’s vibe. Bring your "weird and wonderful" ideas; I enjoy the challenge of making them work.

Secure the date now: Check availability in real time to ensure your time remains an unshared resource. You are welcome to reserve your day now and refine the specifics later.

Email the field: I am out in the landscape more than at the PC, but I will get back to you personally. The more detail you provide, the better the journey can be built. These details can be found at the bottom of the page.

Our approach

Historic Orkney exists as a deliberate commitment to the islands. We prioritize the integrity of the landscape and its wildlife over volume. Our standards are built on quiet precision, direct feedback and operational clarity rather than marketing labels. We deliver an uncompromised, professional service rooted in the landscape. "Don't miss the opportunity to book this crazy guide! Not dusty like lots of others, but funny, full of historic knowledge about Orkney and constantly talking. But no worries: If necessary, you can switch him off! We didn't use this opportunity. "

"Calum is an extremely kind and knowledgeable individual whose stories made a three hour tour go by as if it was 30 minutes. I HIGHLY recommend a tour with him - great guy, fantastic afternoon. Thanks for everything Calum!"

"We had a fantastic day. We were able to experience several Neolithic sites during the Showcase tour, and with Calum’s vast knowledge of the island, learned plenty. He is incredibly friendly and has a great sense of humour. Don’t miss this tour with an amazing guide and person."

"Instead of lecturing us with facts and dates, he painted the history of Orkney ( older than the pyramids) with the story of where he grew up. Spectacular way to spend your time and money if you’re limited to one day on Orkney as we were."

"Calum was a brilliant guide, you want a local who knows the "secret handshake" that gets you into places and experiences no one else can or that is already fully booked! My only regret is we didn't stay in Orkney longer, I would hire Calum everyday if we did, he was extremely knowledgeable and lovely to share space with, very safe and respectful person."

"Interested and interesting, curious and open but still with integrity. Could not think of a better ambassador for Orkney, and would highly recommend anyone visiting Orkney to go with Calum. The extra knowledge you get just to spend time in the car is worth every penny."

The deep time tapestry

We walk upon layers of empires where the soot of Stone Age hearths still stains the soil, mixing with the shattered iron of Viking dreams and the salt-bitten rust of wartime ghosts.

Here, the stories never end; they simply fold into the earth.

Until the next rotation comes around.
